Chapter Nine

It was a little after ten o’clock when Callie opened her eyes to the midmorning sun filtering in through her bedroom curtains. She started to jump out of bed, but then remembered and instead snuggled deeper beneath the blankets and released a small sigh.

As much as she hated to admit it, she’d needed the day off.

The long hours had drained her and she’d definitely needed the extra sleep and time to recharge. The past two days she’d been so tired she’d felt as if she were walking through sludge. Not only was her body completely exhausted, but her mind was, as well.

She felt as if she’d been thinking about murder forever. She knew Mac intended to call in the FBI in the morning if nothing broke today. He’d given them all the last couple of days to come up with something...anything...that would move the investigation forward. And they’d all failed him.

The birds left at each murder scene haunted her dreams. If they could only figure out what they meant. They were obviously part of the killer’s ritual and meant something important to him.

At least now the women in town had taken Mac’s warning to heart. As soon as the darkness of night fell, the streets emptied of people. During the day if women were out and about, they were always with a friend or in a group. They all were taking their safety very seriously and hopefully making it impossible for the killer to take another victim.

That was the only reason Mac had put off calling in the FBI. However, Callie knew tomorrow morning he was probably going to make that call. Hopefully the FBI with their more sophisticated tools would be able to crack the case.

No more thoughts about murder today, she chided herself. It was her day off and she intended to spend it doing things that made her happy.

With that thought in mind, she finally pulled herself out of bed and headed for a shower. Forty-five minutes later she sat at her kitchen table with a cup of coffee and a piece of toast. She finished off the toast and then as she drank the rest of her coffee, she made a list of the people she wanted to buy Christmas presents for.

Normally by this time of the month she’d already be finished with her shopping and the presents would be wrapped and ready to go. But normally she wasn’t involved in a murder investigation.

She always bought gifts for the other dispatchers and she also had a few friends she usually bought for. But she hadn’t had much to do with her friends lately. She also wanted to find something really special to give to Mac.

Mac. Her heart expanded with thoughts of him. There was no question she was falling deeper and deeper in love with him even though she wasn’t sure how he felt about her. There were times she thought she saw love for her shining from his beautiful gray eyes, and then there were other times when she felt as if he intentionally shut her out.
